Exhibit Guidelines - 2016
Audrey K. Dowling
Since 1982, AUDREY KAY DOWLING has owned and run the Portage Hill Gallery in Westfield NY. The Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of talented local artists from the Chautauqua region. There, she has juried/curated many shows over the years including, Putting the Fun in Functional T-pots of Eugenia Firth Meltzer (2010), and Shape Shifters Poetry Collage of Virginia Schaefer Horvath (2010). Her interest of regional art in Chautauqua County expanded outside of the area in 2009, when she curated Chautauqua Atmosphere: Six Artists Create at South Wing Gallery in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. In 2002, Dowling received a grant from the Arts and Business Council of NYS and NYSCA to fund Artist and Gallery Coordination for the Chautauqua County Cultural Tourism Initiative.
Alongside her curatorial accomplishments, Dowling carries out a passion for making art of her own. She creates organic functional and abstract ceramic forms that are decorated with illustrations of nature, as well as paintings, drawings, and various mixed medias. Her work strives to remind viewers of the natural beauty in our world; that we coexist with nature whether we acknowledge it or not. “Form is beautiful, color is exciting, movement is visually stimulating, and texture and patterns open my eyes and my heart to express myself through art,” says Dowling when talking about her process.
