Directors' Assistant: Katie Turnquist
Katherine Turnquist is a mixed media artist from Ashville NY. In the spring of 2015, she received her BFA from Alfred University in Painting and Ceramics. Her work experiments with different combinations of materials both traditional, and crafty. The most common theme in Turnquist’s work is light. Whether the concepts of light are referenced, or if light is used as a material, every piece works to highlight the magical qualities of this phenomenon. Her fascination with light is inspired by her nostalgia of an imaginative childhood.
About her work she says, “I often reminisce of a time during my childhood when I would experience a hopeless longing and desire to jump into a fantasyland and enter the nature of another world. I used to wish with such force to have the ability to befriend magical creatures like unicorns and elves, that I would feel pain over my physical inability to bridge reality. After a certain age the same feeling is hard to obtain, and it is this sensation that leads me to return to many of the same materials that evoke a sense of wonder.”
